Erectile Dysfunction or Impotence is can be caused by psychological issues or health and lifestyle choices. Watch Sriram explain what erectile dysfunction is and what to do about it.
Q. 21 year old from Jaipur wonders, “I just started having sex with my gfbut I can’t keep an erection for very long. It’s very embarrassing, what do I do?”
A. Erectile Dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence is a problem where a man cannot keep an erection long enough to mutual satisfy his partner. If it only happens occasionally, then that is completely normal and there is no need to worry.
If this happens very frequently then the cause can be two things, either psychological or medical.
In young adults like you, ED is most commonly psychological. If you have sexual anxiety, are overly concerned about sexual performance, or negative experience of sex in the past, you may find it hard to maintain an erection. For this, I’d say to relax and get comfortable with your partner.
Medically, hypothyroidism, cardiovascular, drugs, smoking, or surgery in bladder or rectum can all be potential causes.
There are no formal tests to diagnose ED. Go to a doctor for a thorough check up. Seeing a psychiatrist is a good place to start.
